Council urged to take down cliff nets stopping sand martins nesting

A local council has been urged to remove netting on cliffs preventing sand martins returning to nest sites after migrating from Africa.

North Norfolk District Council has used it on parts of the cliffs at Bacton to encourage the birds to nest further along the coast as it delivers a major sandscaping project to protect homes and Bacton Gas Terminal.

The council said the use of the temporary specialist netting followed a detailed environmental assessment and 샌즈카지노 had been approved by government conservation agency Natural England, with advice from the RSPB.

But the bird conservation charity has urged the council to remove the nets, saying the authority did not follow its advice.

Jeff Knott, the RSPB’s director for eastern England, said: “The decision by North Norfolk District Council to net the cliffs at Bacton does not follow the advice previously given by the RSPB, nor indeed the council’s own plans for this site.

“We are now calling on the council to remove the nets so that sand martins can return to their nest sites after their long flight from Africa.”

The call comes after footage showed a sand martin trying to reach its nesting tunnel in the cliffs, but being blocked by the netting.

The birds winters in Africa before migrating back to the UK to breed in the spring.

A council spokesman said: “We understand that the RSPB has concerns around the temporary netting element of the project and we are intending to meet with them and contractors on site to fully assess what those concerns are.

“Careful consideration of what time of year to progress was given because of the need for good weather and longer days, with the summer significantly safer for both the scheme’s success and for contractors working on the project.

“Without these works the cliff itself is at long-term risk as well as the adjoining communities and the terminal.”

The council said the netting, which covers bare areas of the cliffs that are actively eroding, had been placed to cover the minimum area possible and would be in place for a short a time over one season.

There are three daily checks in place to make sure the netting remains in place and that no birds become entangled in it, the council said.

The measure is part of the Bacton to Walcott sandscaping project which will place 1.8 million cubic metres of sand on the beaches to provide protection to Bacton Gas Terminal and the villages of Bacton and Walcott.

Developers have also faced recent criticism over netting of trees and hedgerows near building sites to prevent birds nesting, making it easier to remove greenery without falling foul of rules against damaging active nests.

On Monday, Communities Secretary James Brokenshire wrote to leading developers reminding them of their legal obligation to consider the impact of projects on local wildlife and the need to take action to protect habitats.

A parliamentary petition to make netting hedgerows to prevent birds from nesting a criminal offence has more than 254,000 signatures.

Another petition calling for legal protection to swallow, swift and martin nest sites, not just their active nests, has more than 35,000 signatures.

Retailer Casino keeps French profit goal after Q4 sales improvement

Retailer Casino keeps French profit goal after Q4 sales improvement

PARIS, Jan 17 (Reuters) – French retailer Casino said on Tuesday it would deliver on its French profit forecast for 2016 after fourth-quarter sales reflected an improvement in its home market on a same-store basis, notably at the Geant hypermarkets.

In Brazil, its second-biggest market by revenue, food retail sales were robust, driven by the cash and carry Assai stores and sales revitalisation of the Extra hypermarkets, Casino said.

Casino, whose credit rating was cut to junk by Standard & Poor’s last March, is under pressure to revive profits in its biggest market in France, where it now makes more than 50 percent of its sales, at a time of slower growth in Brazil.

Casino added it no longer consolidates Brazil’s Via Varejo consumer electronics unit, which it plans to sell.

Casino, which controls Brazil’s Grupo Pao de Acucar , posted fourth-quarter sales of 10.929 billion euros ($11.65 billion).

Stripping out acquisitions, disposals, currency effects and fuel, group sales rose 5.1 percent year-on-year.

Casino, which reports full-year earnings on March 7, said full-year 2016 trading profit in France – estimated and unaudited – was slightly over 500 million euros, 샌즈카지노 as forecast by the company.

The figures were published on the company’s website.

3 Australian casino staff in China to face formal charges

3 Australian casino staff in China to face formal charges

BEIJING (AP) — China has indicated to Australia that it will prosecute three Australian employees of a casino operator over suspected gambling crimes, the Australian foreign ministry said Tuesday.

A ministry statement said Australia received formal arrest notices from China following the detention last month of three employees of Crown Resorts Ltd.

The three were jailed in an apparent crackdown on efforts to lure wealthy Chinese gamblers to its Australian casinos.

China has not said what charges the trio will face or detailed the allegations against them. Fifteen Chinese employees of Crown were also detained last month.
The status of their cases is not known.

The three Australians include the head of Crown’s VIP International team, Jason O’Connor, who was visiting China from the company headquarters in Melbourne, Australia, when staff were detained in raids across China on Oct.

13 and 14.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said Australia’s consular staff visited all three on Tuesday.

“They are in good health, they are all represented by lawyers and we were able to provide advice and support and messages from their families,” Bishop told Sky News television on Wednesday.

“It is a very difficult circumstance, but we will continue to provide whatever advice and support that we are able,” she added.

Australia and China worked closely to enhance two-way trade and investment, she said.

“There is, however, an overall anti-corruption agenda of President Xi Jinping and gambling is one of the areas of interest to them,” Bishop said.

Casino gambling is illegal in mainland China, and Chinese law prohibits agents from organizing groups of more than 10 Chinese citizens to gamble abroad.

The industry has been known to skirt the ban by touting destination packages rather than gambling, particularly as Chinese President Xi Jinping’s ongoing corruption crackdown has deterred some gamblers from Macau, an offshore Chinese gambling enclave.

The three people arrested are being held in Shanghai, according to the Australian foreign ministry.

Crown did not respond to a request for comment late Tuesday.
